The year is 1930s Chicago — a city gripped by the Great Depression and ruled by gangsters. A lonely, isolated creature known only as Frank (Christian Bale) — Frankenstein's monster himself — arrives in the city. He is tired of being alone. He seeks out Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening), a brilliant and unconventional scientist, and begs her to create a companion for him.
A young woman named Ida (Jessie Buckley) is murdered by small-time criminals in the city streets. Dr. Euphronious and Frank bring her back from the dead — and The Bride is born. But the newly reborn Ida is not content with simply being Frank's companion. She wakes up with fury, independence, and a fierce will of her own — and refuses to be controlled or defined by the men around her.
What begins as a bizarre love story quickly becomes a wild, chaotic, and deeply feminist adventure. The Bride's rage explodes across Chicago. She and Frank eventually fall into an outlaw romance reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde, pursued by a tenacious detective Jake Wiles (Peter Sarsgaard) and his sharp secretary Myrna Mallow (Penélope Cruz). Along the way they encounter glamorous actor Ronnie Reed (Jake Gyllenhaal) and other colourful characters who change their story forever.
Written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal — her second film after The Lost Daughter — The Bride! is a bold, visually extravagant reimagining of the classic Frankenstein's Bride character. Shot in IMAX, the film is a chaotic mix of horror, dark comedy, romance, and feminist rage. It sparked strong debate among audiences and critics alike.
